Entering Class Size and Classroom Sizes
We usually receive upwards of 80 applications and admit about 12 students per cohort year. The class size changes depending upon if it is needed for other programs as well but the counseling only courses are usually the size of the cohort.
Fieldwork Hours Accrued During Program
A minimum of 150 hours of direct (face-to-face) counseling experience with clients and 75 hours of advocacy and support must be earned prior to graduation.
Personal Psychotherapy Requirement During Program
Although the Counseling Program does not require trainees to be in either individual or group psychotherapy during the time they are in the program, we strongly encourage it.
Comprehensive Exam/Culminating Project/Thesis/Etc:
This requirement may be met by taking and passing the comprehensive exam or by completing an approved Master’s thesis.

Undergraduate GPA Required
A bachelor’s degree with substantial preparation in psychology is required. A minimum GPA of 3.0, some experience in human services and /or research, and goals that match the program’s objectives are expected.

Application Highlights
Three letters of reference and a response to nine autobiographical questions must be submitted through CalState Apply by the application deadline.
Interview Requirement
Applicants are screened first on the basis of their application materials and then a personal interview.
Program Summary
The Counseling Masters of Arts program is a 4-5 semester program that emphasizes a solid foundation in clinical theory and research, along with extensive training in clinical skills. Supervised fieldwork/practica are a required part of the program, including experience working directly with clients in Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS).
The program is accredited by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Academic requirements for the Marriage & Family Therapist (MFT) license and a minimum of 150 hours of supervision by a licensed professional are provided.
The program is administered by a faculty committee which plans the curriculum, makes program policy, and selects students for admission. The chair of the committee, the Program Coordinator, serves as official advisor to all students in the program.
